The Canora Arts Council will be renewing its Stars for Saskatchewan concert series for the 2016/2017 season. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and council members, four concerts will be shown at Canora Composite School.

The series will begin on October 26 with a performance by Lisa Brokop. Brokop is one of the most nominated and award-winning female vocalists in Canadian country music history, a release from the Canora Arts Council said.

The concert will feature both hits from country music’s past and several of Brokop’s own songs in what the Arts Council calls “an incredible musical journey.” Several hits from Patsy Cline’s career, such as Walkin’ After Midnight, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Crazy will be played along with Brokop’s pieces, such as Better Off Broken.

Interested parties can visit Brokop’s website at www.lisabrokop.com.

The next performance will be on November 15 and feature The Lion, The Bear, The Fox. The band consists of Christopher Arruda (the ‘lion’), Cory Woodward (the ‘bear’) and Ryan McMahon (the ‘fox’), and features a wide variety of musical genres, from stompy blues to rock grooves to folk songs, the release said.

The Lion, The Bear, The Fox is an intimate show that will certainly intrigue audiences, it said. The band’s website is located at www.thelionthebearthefox.com.

The penultimate performance will be one by Eric Harper on February 6. Harper is an award-winning flamenco guitarist that the Arts Council calls “melodically entrancing, virtuosically ferocious and harmonically soul-stirring to the core.”

The performance is a blend of rock and flamenco and will feature songs from The Best of Eric Harper, A Very Timely Christmas, Rompera Madrugada and Ribeira.

“Think Dave Matthews meets the Gypsy Kings.”

Those interested in seeing more from Harper can visit www.ericharpermusic.com.

Andino Suns will be the performance that completes the 2016/2017 season. The performance, which will take place on February 23, will feature a fusion of Andean Mountain instrumental pieces with Latin rhythm and melodies. Andino Suns’ members hail from Regina, but their family heritage traces back to Santiago, Chile.

The band has been performing in music festivals across Canada since 2013, and one of their albums, It’s Time to Rise, was nominated for World Recording of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

The performance is sure to be exuberant, rousing, political and spiritual, the release said. Andino Suns has a website at www.andinosuns.com.

The Canora Arts Council is a part of the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils, and is dedicated to touring performing arts and visual and media arts in Saskatchewan. It was created in 1948.

Residents and visitors in Canora who are interested in attending any part of the Stars for Saskatchewan concert series can purchase either a ticket for a performance, or a subscription to all four performances. For information, contact Dorothy Korol.
