The Canora Composite School senior girls basketball team has returned from Christmas break to win first place at a Moosomin tournament.

The Canora senior Cougars have had “a good start to the season,” according to coach Curtis Baillie. The team attended its first tournament in Esterhazy with a solid fourth-place finish.

“It was a good weekend as the girls had some very close and intense games,” said Baillie.

The girls have now won their second tournament after three games. They defeated McNaughton High School 57-12 in their first game before playing “a strong defensive game” against Melville Comprehensive Institute. The team came out on top with a 36-34 victory.

The final was against Rocanville School, that Baillie mentioned had defeated Canora Composite School by one point in the Esterhazy tournament.

“This time around, Canora would come out on top in a very convincing win,” Baillie said, adding that the team won 58-26.

The team was to participate in another tournament at Birch Hills on January 13 and 14, and Baillie said the tournament should be a good test of skill for the team.

The senior girls basketball team will host its home tournament on January 27 and 28.
