Young hockey players have been getting their chance to show their talents during Canora Minor Hockey games throughout the season.

Canora Minor Hockey Rising Stars is a program organized by the Canora Minor Hockey Association and allows young players not yet old enough to participate in minor league hockey games an opportunity to be on the ice with older players. During Friday Night Hockey games in Canora, players from the Red Squirt and White Squirt teams are chosen to be showcased. A total of two players between the ages of three and five join each warmup on the ice prior to hockey games with the novice, atom and peewee teams.

The young players get the opportunity to join the team in the dressing room where they are geared up in team jerseys before they take part in the team warmup and stretches.

“It’s a great chance for the kids to be inspired by their older siblings and friends,” said Genevieve Shukin, manager.

The first two Rising Stars, Kenzie Kopelchuk and Priah Wolkowski, joined their siblings Codee Kopelchuk and Logan Wolkowski on December 16. Shukin said they were eager to warm up with the Canora PeeWee Cobras, who played Yorkton Days Inn and Suites Terriers after the warmup.

On December 23, Karter Shukin and Ashton Strelioff of the Red Squirts were selected to warm up with the Canora Novice Red Cobras. They joined siblings Kaelyn Shukin and Ashton Strelioff before the game against the Cote Chiefs.

January 6 saw cousins Maddix Sawka of the White Squirts and Mason Reine of the Red Squirts join the Canora Novice Red Cobras before the game against the Langenburg Warriors.
