Students honoured in Invermay School graduation ceremonies

Invermay School celebrated the end of the school year with a graduation ceremony on June 29 to congratulate and award the students who have completed Grade 12.

            Invermay School celebrated the end of the school year with a graduation ceremony on June 29 to congratulate and award the students who have completed Grade 12.

            The eight graduates honoured at the ceremony were: Hailey Enge, Jeffrey Jensen, Charnel Kopec, Brittany Kowalyshyn, Mikayla Markowski, Dustin Rioch, Shaelyn Serron, and Samantha Wallin.

            The theme of the graduation was ‘The rest is still unwritten,’ based off a line from Natasha Bedingfield’s song, Unwritten. The guest speaker was Roberta Kulyk, who delivered a speech after an introduction by Dustin Rioch. The valedictorians, Samantha Wallin and Shaelyn Serron, also spoke.

            During the ceremony, awards were given to eligible students and scholarships were presented to qualified graduates. Brittany Kowalyshyn won the Good Spirit School Division Scholarship, Invermay School Staff Scholarship, School Community Council Scholarship, Crossroads Credit Union Scholarship, Invermay Kinette Scholarship, and Village of Invermay Scholarship. Her awards included the Mathematics Award, Canadian Studies/History Award, the Grade 12 Academic Award, and the Grade 12 Proficiency Award.

            Jeffrey Jensen qualified for the science and English awards, as well as the Leson’s Funeral Home Scholarship and the Wadena Co-operative Association Scholarship.

            Samantha Wallin was eligible for the SUN Local #236 Scholarship and the Cross Age Tutor Scholaship. She also won the SADD (Students Against Drinking and Driving) Award, Red Cross President Award, and Visual Arts Award.

            Dustin Rioch was honoured with the Senior Spirit of Cooperation Award, as well as the RM of Invermay Scholarship and Canora Ambulance Scholarship. Shaelyn Serron, a fellow graduate, was presented with the GX94/Fox FM Saskatchewan Innovation & Opportunity Entrance Scholarship, and Hailey Enge won the Practical and Applied Arts Award.

            Yearbook awards were presented to Brittany Kowalyshyn and Samantha Wallin, and Cross Age Tutor Certificates were also awarded to the two graduates. Jeffery Jensen and Dustin Rioch were given athletic awards for the senior male category.

            Academic medallions were given to Brittany Kowalyshyn, Jeffery Jensen, Samantha Wallin, and Shaelyn Serron for their academic achievements.

            Non-graduates were also given awards during the ceremony. Megan Steranka received an athletic award in the senior female category, and the Senior Spirit Award went to Shayna Dubas. The Past SRC President Award went to Megan Fey.

            Chantelle Redman, a graduate from 2015, received the Governor General’s Award for graduating with the highest average in her class.

            As a special treat, the Invermay School Kindergarten class had a graduation of their own. Elena Bell, Addison Enge, Elissa Karcha, Jasmin Kowalyshyn, Kashton MacLean, and Jordan Mendoza celebrated their journey to Grade 1. In a few short years, those children will be onstage for their Grade 12 graduation.
