Canora archers compete in southern provincials in Moose Jaw

Sixty-two Canora NASP archers took part in the southern provincials on April 29 at the Yara Center in Moose Jaw.

Sixty-two Canora NASP archers took part in the southern provincials on April 29 at the Yara Center in Moose Jaw.  Due to the high number of approximately 1,000 archers in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), students were divided into a north and south provincials this year.

            There were several individual medal winners from Canora at the competition.

            In the elementary boys division, Matthew Makowsky, Grade 4, Canora Junior Elementary School, put up a score of 258, which won him a silver medal in both southern provincials and overall provincials.

            Alden Baron, Grade 8, Canora Composite School (CCS) won a gold in the elementary boys division, both in southern provincials and overall provincials, with a winning score of 284. He also picked up a bow as a prize for his efforts.

            In the high school boys division, Bryce Pelechaty, Grade 11, CCS, won a gold medal in the southern provincials with a 271 score.

            In high school girls action, Kaitlyn Lanstad, Grade 11, CCS, achieved a score of 266, which brought her a bronze medal in the southern competition; while Felicity Mydonick, Grade 10, CCS, scored 277, good enough for a silver medal in southern provincials and a bronze medal in overall provincials. That provincial bronze medal also won a $500 scholarship for Mydonick.

            The Canora grades 9-12 high school team won a silver medal in the southern provincial team competition. The grades 6-8 middle school team brought home a bronze medal in the southern competition, while the grades 4-5 elementary school team won a silver in the southern provincials and a provincial bronze medal.
