The fourth draw in the Duck Mountain Super League (DMSL) of men's curling was played December 6 in Norquay, where all three sheets of ice were keen and festooned with local business logos.

Don Bowes of Kamsack and Norquay's Ken Newell delighted the crowd with excellent calls and shot making. Bowes appeared to be in control of the game after six ends, but allowed Newell to steal two points in the seventh.

Newell, one up coming home with shot rock buried behind heavy cover, forced Bowes to attempt a tricky raise take out for the tie. The attempt failed, giving Newell, sponsored by Challoner Farm Inc., a home ice victory, his second win in round-robin play.

Rick Kinaschuk of Benito struck for five points on the first end, leaving Kamsack's Randy Trofimenkoff dazed and in a deep hole. There was a glimmer of hope for Trofimenkoff in the fourth end when he attempted a raise double for four, but this rock narrowly missed its target, giving Kinaschuk another point. The teams shook hands after seven ends.

The third game was an intense and high-volume battle between the Kolodziejski rink of Canora, which included MLA Terry Dennis and is sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds, and Fred Perepiolkin of Kamsack. The Kamsack rink, in excellent form, applied constant pressure, resulting in two four-enders and an early victory.

When the curling was over, all six teams enjoyed flavourful chicken wings and beverages in the well-appointed Norquay curling rink lounge.

Although they sat out in Draw No. 4, the Jeremy Hrycenko team of Arran continues to lead the DMSL with three wins and no losses. The team is followed by Bowes, Perepiolkin, and Kinaschuk, all with two wins and two defeats, and Newell with two wins and one loss. Trofimenkoff has a single victory and the Kolodziejski rink, last year's defending champion, is off to a slow start.

Draw No. 5 league's travelling bonspiel was to have been played in Canora on December 13, when Trofimenkoff was to be up against Newell, Hrycenko was to face Kolodziejski, and Perepiolkin was to trade shots with Kinaschuk.

Super league curling action returns to the Broda Sportsplex in Kamsack on December 20. The public is welcome. Admission is free.
