The Canora/ Sturgis RCMP responded to 30 calls for service during the reporting period, some of which included: eight traffic collisions, one break and enter, one fraud, one impaired driver, one assault, and one mischief.
On January 17 RCMP responded to a complaint where a male casually walked into a private Canora residence and acted like he was welcome. The male proceeded to steal the homeowner’s cell phone and glasses, refusing to leave. The male then prevented both females that were in the residence from leaving before help arrived. Once police arrived on the scene they determined that the male needed to be taken to the hospital to be checked out medically. When police arrested the male and attempted to remove him from the residence a fight broke out between the RCMP and the male. RCMP deployed the Taser in order to gain control over the subject. Once the male was placed in handcuffs and leg shackles he was transported to the hospital for treatment. The male has also been charged criminally for his actions.
On January 18 Canora RCMP received several complaints about snowmobiles driving very fast and aggressively within town limits. The RCMP would like to remind the public that a town by-law is in effect preventing snowmobiles from driving within town limits. Police discretion is usually used when enforcing this by-law but the RCMP ask all drivers to be respectful when driving in town and to drive slowly, quietly, and in back alleys when possible. Be courteous to the public and drive safely.
On January 20 a snow blower appeared to be unloaded and left on a street in Canora. If you are missing a snow blower, please contact the Canora RCMP to claim.
On January 21 a train derailed just north of Canora. At this time, it is unclear what caused the train derailment. The derailment caused traffic to be redirected off Hwy No. 9 for approximately two hours. No one was injured as a result of the derailment.
The Canora-Sturgis RCMP are looking for help with the following occurrence. A bag of random items was left at a residence on First Avenue West in Canora on January 14. The items were left by an unidentified Caucasian male with reddish-brown hair and beard wearing a red toque, navy overalls with reflectors and hiking boots.
