Students at the Canora Junior Elementary School began their part in fundraising for the school’s new playground equipment last week. At a school assembly on Friday, Kellyanne Ostafie, chair of the School Community council (SCC), introduced the students to the pledge sheets they will be using when canvassing for donations. The goal is to raise about $130,000 for playground equipment which should be installed during the summer and be ready for the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

Last year, Good Spirit School Division inspectors informed the school administration that the swings and slides did not meet safety standards and would have to be removed. With the SCC taking the lead, the goal is to raise the $130,000 locally, said Ostafie. Students are taking ownership of the project and will be playing a major role in the fundraising effort. Along with new swings and slides, the project will also include a new play structure. From left, among the students showing the pledge forms they are using were: Jack Craig (Grade 4), Henry Craig (Grade 2), Porter Wolkowski (Grade 4), Josh Prychak (Grade 1), Owen Ostafie (Grade 1) and Shayna Leson (Grade 4). Wolkowski and Leson are student representatives on the SCC.
