The annual antler measuring day of the Canora branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation was held on December 9 at the Clubhouse, when a total of 10 sets of antlers were submitted.

Larry Tiechko, Canora branch member and one of the official antler measurers, said seven white-tailed deer, two mule deer and one elk were measured. The other measurers were Darcy Rewakowsky and Stephen Wyonzek (branch president.) Bryan Hryhoriw recorded the scores and Keith Ostafie then tabulated the scores on a computer.

Two of the white-tailed deer and one of the mule deer were submitted by juniors.

The only set of elk antlers came from Kaitlyn Landstad in the women’s category.

No moose were scored.

Overall numbers were down somewhat from 2017, with contributing factors being fewer hunters and a lower deer population, said Tiechko. Even though deer population was down, hunters reported that more immature white-tailed bucks were spotted.

Tiechko said the mule deer population is increasing every year, and a significant number were spotted in the Canora area. The moose population is quite high and continues to rise.

Unfortunately for hunters, there are healthy populations of coyotes and wolves reported around the area.

Tiechko said the hide collection has been suspended indefinitely by the SWF head office due to the lack of buyers and the cost of logistics.

The measuring results will be announced and the winners in the various categories will be declared at the annual awards night set for April 6 at the Rainbow Hall in Canora.

2019 memberships are available from the Canora branch executive and at Canora Farm Service from Greg Landstad.
