In a project initiated by Mayor Jim Vewchar and approved by Town Council, a number of volunteers were working in minus 20 degree temperatures on January 17 to create an outdoor skating rink with natural ice for Canora. Devon Sawka took a turn flooding the skateboard park surface to create the ice. Vewchar said numerous Canora residents had previously expressed support for the creation of such a rink. In addition to Vewchar and Sawka, Garrett Frost and Brendon Skibinsky also volunteered their time. Skibinsky shoveled a good deal of the snow off the surface before the skid steer, provided by Renegade Plumbing, arrived to finish the job. Water for the flooding was provided by the Canora Fire Department. Sawka said they planned to flood the surface and allow it to freeze several times, with the hope of opening the new skating surface to the public by around January 22.
