School is not only a place for learning, but a place for talented, dedicated students to go the extra mile for their fellow classmates, and Canora Junior Elementary School rewarded those students during an awards ceremony June 22.
Students who put their extra time and dedication into extracurricular activities were given special commemoration during the event, held in the Canora Junior Elementary School’s gymnasium. Four bikes were also awarded by the Canora Fire Department at the end of the assembly.
Safety patrollers were thanked for their service with certificates and commemorative pins. Receiving these awards were: Kian Kosar, Hunter Lamb, Shayna Leson, Ugo Riccio, Callie Sznerch, Nate Wolos, Tyrese Blackbird, Rylan Bletsky, Jack Craig, Ethan Curtis, Brayden Goetzinger, Jim Grayston, Brandon Harder, Jordan Harper, Bronson Heshka, Kaulen Katryniuk, Madison Kryski, Kaira Kuhn, Lucas Latham, Zennia Lukey, Michael Owchar, Joshua Rock, Hunter Secondiak, Gregory Severight, Brianna Smith-Carriere, Porter Wolkowski, Kyan Littlechief and Bailee Zuravloff.
Also thanked were bus captains and assistant bus captains. The helpful students, who had their names engraved on a plaque and were presented with certificates, were: bus captains Michael Owchar, Callie Sznerch, Porter Wolkowski, Hunter Secondiak, Jack Craig, Matthew Makowsky, Nate Wolos, and Brayden Goetzinger, and assistant bus captains Tyson Korol, Jesse Kopelchuk, Connor Kraynick, Kaulen Katryniuk, Kale Strelioff, Alaina Roebuck, and Wyatt Wolkowski.
The Student Community Council (SCC) members that helped plan fundraisers such as June’s earlier dunk tank fundraiser for the new pool had their names on a plaque. The SCC included Kellyanne Ostafie as president, Naomi Paley as vice-president, Lindsey Propp as secretary, Jill Craig as treasurer, and Porter Wolkowski and Shayna Leson as Grade 4 representatives.
Outstanding library helpers for the year were students Shayna Leson and Callie Sznerch. Luca Proff was also given an ice cream certificate to thank her for volunteering as a door holder.
Students with exceptional reading ability were congratulated with the school’s reading awards, given to the top three students of Kindergarten groups one and two and the top five students from grades 1-6. For Kindergarten Group 1, first place went to Parker Kraynick; second to Madison Dutchak, and third to Rori Love. For the second group, Olivia Tratch won first place, with Jack Currah and William Sliva winning second and third respectively.
In Grade 1, the Reading Award winners were: Chase Curtis, first; Natalie St. Mars, second; Luca Propp, third; Kaelyn Shukin, fourth; and Heidi Mentanko, fifth. In Grade 2, the winners included: Meekah Unick, first place; Cody Vangen, second place; Cooper Kraynick, third place; Andrew Owchar, fourth place; and Andrew Sliva, fifth place.
The Reading Award winners for Grade 3 were: Connor Kraynick, first; Ty Sleeva, second; Alaina Roebuck, third; Noah Prychak, fourth; and Sofia Tratch, fifth. Grade 4 winners of reading awards included: Lucas Latham, first; Kaira Kuhn, second; Jack Craig, third; Joshua Rock, fourth; and Gregory Severight, fifth.
The most improved reader was also selected from each classroom. Students who worked extra hard to excel beyond what they originally could accomplish included: Isabelle Chabun (Kindergarten Group 1), Mikayla Tratch (Kindergarten Group 2), Ayshia Connolly (Betty Tomilin’s Grade 1 class), Hanelle Sevilla (Jennifer Prychak’s Grade 1 class), Cody Vangen (Eugene Chomeyko’s Grade 2 class), Henry Craig (Lesley Miles’ Grade 2 class), Keira Favel (Lindsey Ostafie’s Grade 3 class), Lucien Carlson (Grade 3/4), and Brandon Harder (Grade 4).
Kaira Kuhn was presented with the Literary Award for this year. Knights of Columbus also sponsored an award for free throw winners. In the nine-year-old girls category, Bailey Zuravloff received first place, Ava Love received second, and Brianna Carrier received third. In the nine-year-old boys category, Lucas Latham came in first, with Jack Craig and Taye Shukin in second and third.
The Golden Garbage Can award was a large can filled with goodies for the students in the cleanest class to share, and this year it went to the two Kindergarten classes.
Finally, the Citizenship Awards were given to one outstanding student in each classroom who were highly regarded by peers and who contributed to the school positively. The winners for each class were: Madison Dutchak, Kindergarten Group 1; Olivia Tratch, Kindergarten Group Two; Chase Curtis, Betty Tomilin’s Grade 1; Liam Trask, Jennifer Prychak’s Grade 1; Reegan Goetzinger, Eugene Chomeyko’s Grade 2; Lucas Biletski, Lesley Miles’ Grade 2; Noah Prychak, Lindsey Ostafie’s Grade 3; Delilah Wilson, grades 3/4; and Brianna Smith-Carriere, Grade 4.
Rod Steciuk, the school principal, congratulated all of the winners while expressing gratitude to all students.
“One thing I find special is that no matter who wins, everyone is excited and supportive,” he said during the assembly.
