The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 94 calls for service during the week of August 6 to 13, some of which included: 25 traffic offenses, 12 provincial statutes, seven harassments, 12 assaults, three mischiefs, three break and enters, three thefts, two frauds, one arson, and one sexual assault.
The Canora/ Sturgis RCMP would like to advise the public that effective September 3, Canora Court matters will be temporarily moved to Yorkton Provincial Court until further notice due to COVID restrictions.
Dogs poisoned
On August 6 the Canora/ Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of dogs being poisoned in the town of Buchanan. It is not clear how the dogs were poisoned or what exactly occurred but the dogs have been taken to the vet and are recovering.
Hit and run
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to an August 6 complaint of a hit and run in Crystal Lake. Someone had caused damaged by possibly backing into a grey Chevrolet Equinox SUV. The driver side of the vehicle was struck and severely damaged. Anyone with information about this or any other incident is requested to contact the Canora/ Sturgis RCMP by calling 306-563-4700. Stranded on paddle boat
On August 8 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint of two individuals stranded on a paddle boat in the middle of Good Spirit Lake. The individuals were not able to make it back to shore due to strong winds. The paddle boaters were brought back to shore unharmed.
Preeceville dog at large
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint on August 8 of an aggressive dog at large in Preeceville. Members attended and located the large dog that had broken off its leash. The dog’s owners and dog sitter were located and were able to get the dog inside the residence but not before RCMP were forced to pepper spray the dog for the safety of the public.
Cattle on road
On August 9 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint of cattle on the road and quads ripping around on the streets in Rama. It is believed that the quads were used to round up the cattle and get them off the roads.
Preeceville vehicle arson
On August 10 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint of a vehicle arson in Preeceville. With assistance from a security video RCMP were able to locate and arrest the person responsible. The female culprit has been charged and after being held for court has been released with conditions until her next court date.
Golf cart complaints
The Canora RCMP have received numerous complaints about golf carts driving on roads in communities and resorts. Canora/Sturgis RCMP are increasing patrols in the summer months in smaller communities and lake resorts to prevent the driving of ATV’s, golf carts or any other powered vehicles on public roads or property. RCMP would like to remind the public that if caught, drivers could face fines and have their vehicles impounded. The RCMP would like to update the community about the laws in the Traffic Safety Act that will be enforced surrounding golf carts:
• Section 113.1 - unlawfully operate a golf cart on a street, road or highway - fine $80;
• Section 113.1 (4)(a) - unlawfully operate a golf cart without a valid driver’s licence - fine $150; and
• Section 113.1 (4)(b) - operate a golf cart on a street, road or highway without insurance - fine $95.
The Canora/ Sturgis RCMP would also like to advise the public that there will be a zero tolerance to driving a golf car with open alcohol.
Highway collision
On August 12 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a head-on collision between two vehicles on Highway No. 9 north of Gorlitz. RCMP determined that the driver of a northbound vehicle had fallen asleep and travelled into the southbound lane and struck an oncoming vehicle. Luckily the south travelling vehicle was able to take enough evasive action to avoid a complete head-on collision. No one was seriously injured in the collision and charges have been laid against the driver of the northbound vehicle.
Drunken threats
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to an August 12 complaint of an intoxicated male threatening the public with a knife on Fourth Street South in Canora. RCMP located the male who became very aggressive towards the RCMP. RCMP had to put the male on the ground in order to take control and place him under arrest. The male was lodged in cells and was very agitated and irrational. He faces several charges for his actions.
