Christmas giving tradition continued with annual Canora Fill the Sleigh Day

As has become a tradition in recent years, Canora and area residents showed their support for Fill the Sleigh Day at The Bargain Shop as part of the Canora Ambulance Yuletide Toy Drive.

Over $2,000 in donations and toys were accumulated during the special day on December 8 and the toys were collected in an EMS vehicle provided by Canora Ambulance, said Linda Dutchak, Bargain Shop manager.

The cash donations were to be used for the purchase of additional toys, games, books and crafts for local families who may otherwise go without gifts this Christmas.

The store was open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the special event. Santa made an appearance and provided his support for several hours, to the delight of the children present.

A number of “volunteer helper elves” helped out during the day and played a significant part in making sure things ran smoothly. Their support was very much appreciated, said Dutchak. Among the volunteers were: Zennia Lukey, Daylia Lukey, Aidyn Kaytor, Jaylene Kaytor and Logan Grabowski.

Dutchak and Jocelyne Weinbender of Canora Ambulance said they were grateful to all those who made donations.

After Fill the Sleigh Day, the Canora Ambulance Yuletide Toy Drive is scheduled to continue until December 20. At that point Canora Ambulance staff will have the opportunity to make their own donations and then wrap presents prior to their distribution to needy families.

All those receiving gifts remain anonymous.
