In the 12th year of the Canola challenge, the king drives away in a brand new Chevrolet Silverado.

Fedorchuk Farms Ltd. from Norquay has been “crowned” Prairie Soil Services 2018 Canola King Champion. Grant Fedorchuk achieved a gross/ac of $829.18, with a yield of 70.62 bushels per acre and a contracted price of $517.70/MT ($11.74/BU) on the Fedorchuk farm in northeast Saskatchewan, said a release from Mat Dennison, general manager of Prairie Soil Services Ltd.

The Canola King Challenge is a great opportunity for local producers to test new management practices and strategies in an attempt to achieve the highest canola yields possible. This includes, but is not limited to, genetics, seed treatments, chemistries, advanced fertility with the use of micronutrients, fungicides, enhanced technologies and agronomic consulting, reported Dennison.

The Champion was awarded the use of a brand new 2018 Chevrolet Silverado for one year.

Out of the producers that participated in the 2018 challenge, Fedorchuk Farms Ltd. recorded the top gross with $829.18 per acre. Even though Fedorchuk won the challenge, all participants deserve recognition for their achievements and hard work that was put into their 2018 crop, said Dennison.

With the Saskatchewan Provincial average at 39.3 bushels per acre in 2018 and the 10-year average at 33.5 bu/ac, these outstanding producers proved that higher yields are possible when maximizing productivity, more than doubling the provincial 10-year average. This in turn reduces the per bushel cost of production; a concept continually strived for in the annual Field of Dreams project conducted by Prairie Soil Services.
