Members of the Canora branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation were pleased that they had more trophies to measure at their annual horn measuring event this year than they have had in the past three years.
The branch held its annual horn measuring event on December 8 at the branch’s clubhouse, said Larry Tiechko, who is in charge of the branch’s publicity. “We had a very good turnout,”
Measured were trophies taken from: 21 white-tailed deer; two mule deer, one moose and two elk that were scored by a Henry Kelsey official measurer from Yorkton, Tiechko said.
More trophies were measured this year because there were more mature white-tailed bucks harvested than younger ones, he said. The deer population has recovered from the previous couple of years.
The buck-to-doe ratio is good north of Canora, but down around the Good Spirit Lake area, he said. The ratio reported seemed to average approximately one buck to 10 does, but there seemed to be more mature bucks to the north.
The moose population is quite high, especially south of Canora, he said. Hunters say the coyote population is also quite high.
It was challenging to hunt because of the warm weather and a fair amount of crops still out on the fields, Tiechko said. The deer, especially the bucks, were not moving in the warm weather.
The deer are well fed and should have a good start into the winter.
The antler measuring was done by Steven Wyonzek (branch president), Darcy Rewakowsky and Larry Tiechko. Bryon Hryhoriw and Ernie Kozak were the score recorders. Greg Landstad, (membership chair) and Keith Ostafie were the tabulators, while Leslie Hryhoriw is the branch’s secretary-treasurer.
