On September 25 the Canora swimming pool was sandblasted, which is expected to have a wide range of benefits over the years to come, according to Aaron Herriges, director of leisure services.

The Canora swimming pool was sandblasted on September 25. Aaron Herriges, director of leisure services, said to his knowledge, the pool had never been previously sandblasted.

He said this process will provide a variety of benefits both in the near future and in the long term.

“It removes many layers of paint which had already been flaking off,” said Herriges. “Sandblasting provides the opportunity to resurface the bare concrete with epoxy coating which has a 10 to 20-year bond.”

He said sandblasting decreases maintenance costs and eliminates paint chips getting drawn into the water loop.

“It enhances the life of the 10 pool filter cartridges,” explained Herriges. “It enhances the water flow and circulation, thus decreasing the energy needed to heat the pool. It improves safety and makes cleaning easier. It’s cosmetically appealing with no fading in colour.”

A benefit that will no doubt interest swimmers is that sandblasting is expected to save time in the spring. Herriges said it creates the possibility that at the start of the season, the pool will be open to the public sooner than in the past.
