RCMP program looking to involve CCS students in Halloween safety

On October 8, Cst. Adam Huber, the RCMP school liaison officer, visited CCS to speak to senior students about Operation Safe Streets, a program in place for Halloween.

Huber said he is looking for Grade 11 and 12 students to participate in patrolling Canora on Halloween evening.

“By having students patrol the streets it will help keep the streets safe for trick-or-treaters and also create more safety awareness within the community,” said Huber. “Of course, the students would not respond to any kind of a call or an incident. If they see something that requires attention they or their supervisors would call it in and have RCMP members respond.”

The plan for the evening is to have one police officer and one CCS faculty member per group, depending on how many students get involved in the program.

Huber said seeing students wear Halloween costumes for patrolling would add to the fun of the evening, but masks are discouraged.

Students who volunteer will be asked to patrol from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on October 31, followed by a pizza party with free pizza from Gabano’s.

“Students will get volunteer hours for participation,” said Huber, “as well as a certificate from Canora RCMP that can be added to their portfolio.”

Those students who are interested are encouraged to sign up at the CCS school office, and to keep in mind that the final sign-up day is October 21.
