Canora Atom Cobras complete perfect regular season

The Canora Atom Cobras hockey team finished the regular season February 10 at Farrell Agencies Arena in Yorkton with a 4 to 2 win over the Yorkton Medicine Shoppe Terriers.

The win capped off an undefeated regular season for the Cobras, with a record of 18 wins and no losses.

In the Atom division, made up of nine and ten-year-old players, the Cobras have 14 out of 17 second year players, and are very proud of their regular season record, said Jeff Sznerch, coach.

“The main reason for our success to date has been a willingness from all players to come to the rink for practices and games and leave it all on the ice,” said Sznerch. “We've worked really hard to accomplish what we have to date, developing individual skills and our overall understanding of the game. We've really come together as a team which is super important because it takes a team to win. Furthermore, we've seen contributions from every player on our roster to the score sheet which is not always the case in Atom hockey.”

Sznerch is expecting the team to see competitive and exciting games in the upcoming Major Hockey League playoffs, and he believes the Cobras players are up to the challenge.

“To have success going forward we are going to need to keep up the hard work and be willing to go that extra mile for our team. We need to commit to playing a full 60-minute game each time out. If we do that I'm sure we'll have success,” said Sznerch.

“This is a great group of kids. They've been so much fun to be around. We as coaches and all the parents are super proud of them and what they've accomplished to date. I'd like to encourage everyone to come out, support minor hockey in our town and help cheer on our Atom Cobras as we pursue our goal of the league championship.”

The Cobras finished in first place in the North Division of the Major Hockey League and were awaiting the South Division Teams to complete regular season games before taking on the second place team from the South Division in the first round of the playoffs.
