Canora Composite School curling teams sweep away competition

Mixed curling teams from CCS (Canora Composite School) have excelled in recent playoff competition.

Mixed curling teams from CCS (Canora Composite School) have excelled in recent playoff competition.

The junior team earned a silver medal at the East Central District Athletic Association (ECDAA) competition in Esterhazy on February 1 and 2, said Cindy Smith, coach.

Team members were: Brody Harrison (skip), Kailey Sleeva (third), Matthew Dmitruik (second) and Cassidy Zuravloff (lead.)

“Our CCS team won a tough game against Sturgis, defeated Preeceville, and then lost to Esterhazy,” said Smith. “The team came back with a win against Sturgis a second time which set up another meeting with Esterhazy for the Harrison foursome. The game was close all the way and tied up after the eighth end, which resulted in a draw-to-the-pin shootout won by Canora.”

As a result of the victory, Canora faced Esterhazy for a third time in the final game, and came up just short. Esterhazy took gold, and Canora claimed the silver medals.

The CCS senior curling team went undefeated through district play, Smith reported.

Team members were: Brandon Zuravloff (skip), Ally Sleeva (third), Lane Zuravloff (second) and Grace Medvid (lead.)

“At ECDAA playdowns in Yorkton on February 8 and 9, the team had wins against YRHS and Sacred Heart (both are Yorkton schools) to earn gold medals,” said Smith. “This qualified the Zuravloff rink for Regional play in Yorkton on March 1 and 2, where the foursome won a spot at the provincial championships.

Provincials were to be held in Nipawin March 8 and 9. In addition to CCS, other qualifying senior mixed teams were: O'Neill (Regina), Kipling, Carrot River, Spiritwood, Rosetown, Foam Lake and St. Joseph (Saskatoon.)

Sharon Ripa and Cindy Smith, coaches, and all the players were grateful to the Canora Curling Club for it’s continued support.
