Team Zuravloff wins top prize at Canora Town and Country Bonspiel

A team made up of Zuravloff family members won the A event of the Canora Town and Country Bonspiel held at the Sylvia Fedoruk Center from January 23 to 27, which seemed fitting, since the event is known for a strong focus on family participation.

A team made up of Zuravloff family members won the A event of the Canora Town and Country Bonspiel held at the Sylvia Fedoruk Center from January 23 to 27, which seemed fitting, since the event is known for a strong focus on family participation.

A total of 16 teams were entered, with the majority hailing from Canora and Buchanan. John Zbitniff of the Canora Curling Club said 16 was an ideal number of teams for creating a draw and scheduling games.

After winning their way to a spot in the Saskatchewan Junior Men’s Provincial Curling Championship in late December, cousins Lane (lead) and Brandon Zuravloff (second) continued their winning season thanks to a team effort with Brandon’s father Rob (third) and Lane’s father Kent (skip.) Rob and Brandon live in Canora while Kent and Lane are from the Buchanan area.

Team Zuravloff defeated the Tim Olson foursome of Preeceville to capture the top prize.

The foursome skipped by Darryl Rock of Canora finished third and Les Carlson’s Buchanan rink place fourth.

Even though the “Legion of Broom” team of Canora wasn’t a family unit, the members did come up with a catchy name. Team members were: Terry Wilson (skip), Curtis Baillie (third), Aaron Herriges (second) and Nolan Kondratoff (lead.) Second place went to the Dale Lozinski foursome of Canora, with the Kelly Beblow team of Canora third and the Jake Teslia rink of Buchanan in fourth.

Mark McTavish (skip) of Canora joined forces with his brother Kelly (third), Kelly’s wife Jodie Kowalyshyn (second) and Mark’s partner Amanda Popoff (lead) to win the C event by stealing the tying point in the eighth end and the winning point in an extra end, in a tense contest versus the John Zbitniff rink of Canora. Team Kolodziejski of Canora finished third and the Ernie Gazdewich foursome of Canora placed fourth.

Canora Curling Club events planned for the near future include the Canora Ladies Bonspiel and the Two-Person Stick Bonspiel.
